Number Recognition: Preschoolers should be able to recognize numbers from one to ten. They should also be able to recognize the name of a number as well as the number symbol. The best way to teach your kids number recognition is by counting through songs and actions. Of course we all know the song Ten Little Indians which we all learned early on during our preschool years, and this is one good example of a number recognition tool. Nowadays there are a lot of counting numbers songs, tunes and rhymes you can use to further your child's math skills. But ordinary daily activities can also be used for this. While listening to soft music or while putting your child to sleep you can hold his or her fingers and count each finger from one to ten using a light, happy tune. You can have your child count the number of steps while going down the stairs in the morning or while preparing his cereals you can also start counting one to ten for each cereal you put on his plate. It is also important that aside from counting from one to ten they should be able to count backwards from ten to one as a preparation for the principle of subtraction.
Number Sequencing: The knowledge of number sequence is a very important math skill you need to teach your preschooler. Making your child know what the next number in a series will help in mastering his numbers skill. You can count from one to ten but stopping at a number and letting your child fill in the next number is an activity that will be surely be fun for both of you. You can also put those magnet numbers on your refrigerator's door, hide some of the numbers then ask your kid to arrange the numbers from one to ten. Your child should then be able to tell you the missing numbers which you can bring out one at a time. This will be a fun way to keep your child in the kitchen while you are doing your chores and at the same time keeping him occupied. One-to-One Association: This is a Math skill which preschoolers need to learn and understand. One-to-one association is teaching your child to point to one object at a time and to stop pointing when the counting stops. Your child should be able to associate the words with the numbers. Initially we were able to make your child recognize the number symbols and use them for counting. This time around you will have to make your child understand the quantity and the symbol together. One way of teaching them one-to-one association is by enlisting your child's help in arranging your spoons and forks. Make him group the utensils and then make them count out loud while putting back the utensils in the cutlery tray.
As a whole, preschoolers need to be involved in concrete but fun Math activities to build up their pre-Math skills. Providing them with these basic skills in a fun and easy way will make working with numbers a breeze to them in the future. A word of caution though - Do not force your kids to learn everything at one time! These skills should be taught patiently and gradually giving your kids the time to absorb these lessons.
