History

Moshe Levy Diamonds

Billions of years old, diamonds are known as the hardest natural substance.  Equivalent to rarity, timelessness and beauty, diamonds are one of the most attractive things to be formed by nature.  Unlike other gemstones, they are considered the most precious of all because of their deep origin.  Did you know diamonds were formed approximately 150-200 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface?  They were somewhere in the Earth’s mantle before they re-emerged as a gemstone or in jewelry form.

Formed from high pressure and temperature, they are made from one element – carbon.  Once mined, they are sorted into categories depending upon their color, weight and clarity.  After that, they are crafted and smoothed into different shapes and sizes.

Classification

  • Color - diamonds must either be transparent or uniformly-colored to define their brilliance.
  • Cut – its beauty can be determined by its cut, which reflects light exquisitely.
  • Clarity – just like the perfect cut, it must also possess the utmost clarity.
  • Carat – carat refers to the weight of the diamond.  One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams.  It can make a considerable difference in its monetary value, even a fraction of difference in carat.

People in diamond business classify them on the basis of their physical and chemical attributes.

The main technical classifications are: type la, type lla, type lb and type llb.

Types for casual shoppers: natural diamonds, treated diamonds, natural-colored diamonds and man-made diamonds.

Shapes

Although diamonds can be cut into any shape, there are ten of the most popular shapes that people prefer.  They are Round, Princess, Cushion, Oval, Emerald, Pear, Marquise, Asscher, Radiant and Heart-shaped.  Fancy shape diamond manufacturers source and design different diamond designs cut in oval layouts, asscher cuts, etc.

Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of a diamond are mostly focused on strength.

  • Hardness- Since antiquity, a diamond’s hardness relative to other materials is well-known.  Its hardness decides its suitability as a gemstone.  The hardness of a diamond determines its purity, crystalline perfection and orientation.
  • Toughness- A diamond’s ability to resist breakage from forceful impact is good compared to other ceramic materials, but poor compared to engineering materials like engineering alloys.
  • Yield Strength- Diamonds have exceptionally high value compressive yield strength, along with hardness and transparency.  These are the main reason why they are used as the principal tool for high pressure experiments.

Maintenance

Diamonds can maintain their polish very well.  However, a diamond can lose its sparkle as oil or dust is deposited on it.  But if you take care of diamonds regularly, it won’t be hard to keep their shine.  Soak your diamond in mild soapy water for a few minutes and then clean it with a soft-bristled toothbrush.  Avoid using toothpaste or harmful solutions; a mild soap works wonders when it comes to cleaning diamonds.

Longevity

Unlike any other material, a diamond will last for a really long time.  Indeed, it can be said to have eternal life.  With a great demand as always, diamonds will remain forever.

The most precious and enduring of all gemstones, diamonds got their name from the Greek word ‘adamas’, meaning unbreakable.  Its inner fire, exquisite beauty and unique physical qualities make it stand out among other gemstones.  Diamonds are the birthstone of people born in April, thought to provide the wearer with better relationships and inner strength.  You might already know they are hugely popular for engagement and wedding rings.

With all these qualities, diamonds stand as a symbol of strength and beauty.
