Indigestion is some form of gastrointestinal tract upset. It includes diverse symptoms, which in turn may be manifestations of gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal diseases. 
Occasionally patients use the term indigestion to describe the symptoms of heartburn. However, it is defined more specifically as a condition where some of the stomach contents are forcefully backed up into the esophagus. Due to which it results in a burning pain in the lower chest region.

What are the Causes of Indigestion

Disobeying the dietary rules is the supreme cause of indigestion. This may include irregular timings of taking food, Overeating or eating the food too quickly, eating heavy food which is slow to digest.
Suppression of natural urges.
Drinking excessive water unnecessarily.
Sleeping during day time.
Not sleeping at night.
Over usage of caffeine, alcohol, chocolate or carbonated beverages
Smoking
Anxiety
Due to the long term use of certain antibiotics, pain relievers and iron supplements.

What are the Symptoms of Indigestion

Aversion towards the food.
Uncomfortable fullness after the meal. Fullness lasts longer than it should and results in heaviness and bloating in the abdomen.
Constipation or diarrhea.
Nausea, often accompanied by vomiting.
Pain in the abdomen.
Body ache, feeling of heaviness in body, dizziness.
Headache
Repeated yawning and inactive. 
Burning sensation in the chest associated with sour belching
Excessive Sweating.
Excessive thirst.

Indigestion may be an associated symptom with many diseases, few of them include:
Gastritis
Peptic ulcers
Gallstones
Fever
Constipation
Diarrhea
Pancreatitis
Stomach cancer
Intestinal blockage
Reduced blood flow in the intestine

Ayurvedic Treatment For Indigestion

Ginger
Ginger has been a proved drug for indigestion. Chewing raw ginger with salt or drinking 5ml of the ginger juice immediately relieves indigestion. 
Water medicated with dry ginger, coriander seeds, can be of good help.

Buttermilk
Fresh buttermilk prepared with a pinch of cumin seed powder, fresh-squeezed ginger, and pepper should be taken after meals.

Ajwain seeds
Ajwain seeds should be chewed after the meals, which helps in fast digestion helps digestion.

Cinnamon powder mixed with honey taken before food helps to improve acidity and improves digestion of heavy meals.

Cumin seeds
Chewing cumin seeds after the meals is helpful in bloating and checks on digestion.
Boil water prepared with cumin seeds which correct the digestion and helps to eliminate the excess gas formed in the abdomen.

Garlic
Raw garlic chewed after the meal helps to fasten the digestion.

The intake of a spoon full of ghee along with the food also helps in aiding fast digestion. 

Ghee
Ghee is a rich source of butyric acid. This acid helps in bettering the digestion and helps to lower the inflammation.

There are a few things you can do to help reduce the symptoms of indigestion, including:

losing excess weight if you’re overweight or obese
cutting down on fatty foods, tea, coffee, alcohol and anything else that you think triggers your symptoms
stopping smoking
sleeping with the head of your bed raised by about 20-30cm with something sturdy and solid
eating at least two to three hours before going to bed if you have a peptic ulcer
reducing your stress levels - try relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep breathing
not eating too much or too quickly.

Avoid eating stale, hot, spicy & oily food items. Avoid intake of fermented food, junk food & bakery foods regularly. Any incompatible food should be avoided. Should not drink excessive water when hungry because it can weaken the digestive fire.
Avoid intake of pickles, alcohol, spicy, salty, acidic food. Minimalize the usage of fried food, non-veg food items which can furthermore worsen the digestion.
