Cortana becomes friends with Alexa and Google Assistant

We are in an age where we begin our days with “Cortana...”, “Alexa...” and “Okay, Google...”! With current versions being born in 2013, 2014 and 2016 respectively, these have become the world’s most popular virtual assistants. While these virtual assistants were initially available to English speakers in North America, their reach has since grown by leaps and bounds. All are available in at least three languages. Smartphones, appliances and electronics offer virtual assistant features with more to come. Microsoft is changing its course by introducing its own digital assistant, Cortana like that of Google assistant and Amazon’s Alexa. Rather than seeing them as a threat to Cortana,  Microsoft now thinks of Google assistant and Alexa as its fellow digital helpers and wants to infuse Cortana into these technologies making it more progressive to work with.

The role of Microsoft

Microsoft showed how Cortana can work from Amazon Echo’s Alexa and how both can co-exist together. Users will be equipped with a digital assistant through Cortana and Alexa will deliver the rest of the services. Transforming Cortana from an independent assistant into a valuable skill which can be accessed from the service of the competitor, Microsoft is fundamentally converting its digital assistant into an advanced technology which can help in progression in the digital world. This would help  Cortana is widely available outside the GLAS connected thermostat, Windows 10 devices and the Invoke smart speaker from Harmon Kardon.

With Cortana’s collaboration with more smart devices powered by Amazon’s Alexa and Google's Assistant later on, Microsoft will have a considerably bigger gathering of people to push the advantages of its services. Presently, Microsoft clients who need a voice assistant for their service information are not restricted to the speakers built for Cortana only. Even though Microsoft announced Cortana's  joining with Amazon in 2018, it has not reported a course of events for when clients can hope to utilize Cortana on Google Assistant. All the more as of late, Microsoft has been exploring different avenues regarding how Cortana works on PCs by isolating the digital assistant traits from Windows 10's search present in the taskbar.

Cortana as an add-on

Cortana and Alexa can now be opened together on your Xbox One, Windows 10 PC or other Cortana-accommodating gadgets. You can also open Cortana on the Echo and access the assistant of Microsoft. The reason for this was a lack of overlap. You can get access to other information including to-do lists, emails and your calendar. Alexa unlocks access to Amazon's range of services, for instance, voice shopping and music playback. Rather than making Cortana a stand-alone assistant, Microsoft now attempts to make to make it an add-on for other digital assistants. Cortana became part of Windows 10, where the majority of people came across it. However, fewer people are opting for Cortana now that companies and pro users will no longer receive the Cortana voice prompts when they go for the Windows setup. Cortana is rarely mentioned outside a Windows 10 context because other assistants do not support it. Amazon has already accepted to connect Cortana to Alexa, but there is no support for Google Assistant yet.

Alexa and Google Assistant already have an enormous footprint inside your homes. This makes them much more useful than a Cortana assistant who resides on your computer. Recognizing that, Nadella  equates the digital assistants to the interoperable web browsers.

Cortana into other devices

Microsoft will most probably develop Cortana into devices such as surface headphones, but most users will interact with Cortana through other helpers. Changing Cortana's focus will make it more useful. It is not meant to be a Google assistant's or Alexa's  competitor. It is therefore probably a more realistic way for its development to merge them together. Voice calculation is an important new way of interacting with devices. However, the effect of this bent is so wide that even big technology companies realize that they cannot improve everything. This is a great reason why this arrangement united Microsoft and Amazon. The deal of Microsoft can be helpful for Alexa as it becomes more helpful in the world of business, an area in which Amazon has not yet focused its voice assistant. It should also serve millions of PCs to Alexa, which usually prefer Amazon Echo speakers.

Meanwhile, Cortana should profit from the wider exposure, since it is largely restricted to computers and does not have a lot of intelligent house capabilities. The customers also need to gain new skills in their existing equipment. This merge will, thus, help to bring together all the users of both the technologies. While it might be a confounding to ask Alexa to ping Cortana at first or vice-versa,  but in near future, Alexa  will be intelligent enough to divert  your request to the correct assistant for the best task.
