the mission Chandrayaan– II

After the successful implementation and launch of Chandrayaan – I Mission in 2008, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization)is now all set for Chandrayaan -2 Mission. As a fact the objectivity of Chandrayaan – I was to do orbiting around the moon. And most of it’s job was to gather the resourceful information regarding different elements available on the planet by having it’s presence on the lunar surface. So, in this article we will read about the latest information on the mission Chandrayaan -II.

The mission was set to be executed on April, 2018. But due to some technical difficulties it was being suggested to the ISRO that the mission should be postponed and corrective measures should be taken under consideration before finalizing on the date of execution. The mission requires pre-training as to make this mission closest to the success. And that is why Mr. K. Shivan, chairman of ISRO announced the delay for the launch of Chandrayaan -II and shifted the time period from April, 2018 at first place to Feb, 2019 and now to Oct, 2019. And due to this postponement India can lose a chance to be counted under the top 4 countries list for launching the orbiter on the moon.

Glimpse of Chandrayaan – I

Chandrayaan – I was a successful mission executed by ISRO on 22nd Oct, 2008. The mission was just to gather the information from the lunar surface of the moon. And there was only an orbiter section in the spacecraft. It was the first mission to moon launched from Sriharikota. The craft was caring 11 missionary instruments built by India and five other countries including USA and UK. It was launched with the help of PSLV-C11 vehicle with the mission duration of 2 years.

The main focus of the mission was to understand the environmental conditions on the moon and to know about the minerals and other elements available on the planet. The mission was executed 10 years ago by keeping this objective in mind that the mission will upgrade and enhance the technological capabilities of India. The information was to be collected on the subject matter of topographical, geological and mineralogical conditions on the moon.

An Indigenous Mission, Chandrayaan – II

Chandrayaan 2 as discussed by the chief of ISRO will be the first indigenous mission. As per the sources it is being declared by the team that this mission will be initiated on Oct, 2019 and for the first time India will source the overall requirements from the country itself. Although, for some part of the trainings on the safety India may take the help of USA. Total expected budget for the mission is 800 crores as per ISRO’s report.

As per the resources there will be changes in the weight of the spacecraft as it was being observed during the practices that when the landing part is detached from the driving vehicle it floats on the surface of the moon. And to avoid those circumstances weight of 600kg would be increased on the craft.

Instrumental Updates on Orbiter:

  • Improved Imaging Infrared Spectrometer captures and does mapping of volume of hydroxyl ions and water molecules.
  • Double-Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar instrument used for visionary purpose for the darken floors in the polar area to find out the water ice.
  • Orbiter will work in the passive radiometer mode to find out the thickness of the lunar surface and the electronic conductivity.
  • There is another addition named Chandra Atmospheric Composition Explorer 2.

Facts about the mission:

  • The launch date for mission Chandrayaan – II has been postponed to Oct, 2019 as there are some pre-requisites to be fulfilled. Earlier this date was announced as April, 2018.
  • The mission is among 32 planned missions for the year ahead and it is occurring as a 25th mission in the year now.
  • The authorities of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) had declared that the mission will take place between Feb to March, 2019 and they were dedicatedly working on the deadline.
  • Cost of the mission is set for Rs. 800 crore which is much more optimized budget than the budget employed in the mission Chandrayaan – I.
  • The spacecraft going to be used in this mission is weighing 3890 kgs.
  • The spacecraft will be launched with the help of GSLV-MK-III from Sriharikota.
  • The mission comprises of Lander, Orbiter and Rover comprehensively.
  • It will accomplish the several milestones for the skills development and qualification enhancements.
  • Mr. K. Sivan said, that along with this mission ISRO will launch 22 satellites to the space in this year. And within 3 years there will be 50 satellites to be launched in the space by the organization.

Mission Content:

Chandrayaan – 2 mission includes three major parts of it’s objectivity Orbiter, Lander and Rover. As soon as the spacecraft will reach the zone at the distance of 100 km from the lunar orbit. The Rover will be detached from the Orbiter. After a while, the lander will slowly land on the moon’s surface and it will place a Rover on the south pole surface of the moon.

The Rover is designed with 6 wheels and it will roll around the surface with the partial automated controllers. It’s main job will be to roam around the surface area and collect all the data then send it back to the earth. The data will be used to analyze the soil contents available on the planet. The mission will mainly focus on the data collection for scientific information available on topography, elemental abundance, mineralogy, availability of water-ice, hydroxyl and lunar exosphere.

As Chandrayaan –2 is an Indigenous mission and ISRO is going to manage all the required sources and technology from the country itself, it will be a proud event for all of us an Indian. And by the accomplishment of this mission and other listed space and satellite related missions in the year ahead, we will prove to the world that we are skilled and capable to grow and learn the new technological changes and sciences. With the successful implementation of Chandrayaan – 2 we will have abundance of information related with new horizons and we will get the exact idea about the different elements and minerals available on the moon.
