How to Spray Paint your Motorcycle Helmet

To know how to paint motorcycle helmets, it is important to gather all of the equipment and the painting products to use.

When it comes to spray paints, make sure you read the manufacturers label as some spray paints contain harmful substances that might damage the exterior shell. To begin spray-painting your helmet, you need to gather the following equipment.

Things you need:

• Different colours of spray paint
• Reference picture and stencils (optional)
• Masking tape
• 400 grit sandpaper
• 1500 grit sandpaper
• Primer coat
• A flat black quick coat
• Clearcoat
• Latex gloves
• Newspapers

Method:

1)      Cover the surface with newspapers and make sure you wear a pair of latex gloves and cover your mouth with a mask to avoid the spray paints entering your lungs.

2)      Dismantle your helmet by removing the cheek pads, breath guard, visor, screws, nuts, inner liner, Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset and put them to one side. Remove any unnecessary stickers except the safety stamp.

3)      Scrunch the newspaper into a ball and toss it under the helmet. 

4)      Clean the shell of the Best Pink Motorcycle Helmet by using dish detergent to get rid of any residues or any grease on the surface.

Note: If your helmet is already clean, you can skip this step.

5)      Sand the surface of the helmet by using a 400 grit sandpaper and sand evenly all over the shell. When sanding the surface, make sure you sand along the grain but not against it. This helps to make the paint smooth and even.

6)      Take a piece of cloth, wipe the surface using wax, and grease remover. This helps to remove the dust on the headwear.

7)      Use masking tape and tape on those areas you do not wish to paint and tape under the newspapers to avoid falling off.

8)      After masking the tape, use a primer coat and spray evenly onto the surface. Apply 2-3 coats of primer on the shell. Leave the helmet and allow the primer to dry overnight.

Note: Wait for the first coat to dry and apply the next primer.

9)      Apply the flat black quick coat, spray lightly onto the exterior shell, and allow the helmet to dry. Then use a 400 grit sandpaper and sand the surface of the helmet. Dip the helmet in warm soapy water and use the block to sand the helmet for a smooth surface. Then wipe the helmet with a cloth and wax remover.

10)   Use the first colour of spray paint and spray paint on the unmasked areas. Then allow the first colour to dry at an ample time.

11)   If you are using sketches or stencils, put the stencils on the helmet and spray onto the surface. Allow the paint to dry. You can cut out designs by using a knife.

Note: If you do not like to draw designs or use stencils, you can skip this step.

12)   After the first colour has dried, remove the remaining tapes to avoid mixing colours and spray the next colour of your choice.

13)   Allow the second colour to dry. Keep applying multiple layers until your helmet has customized into different colours.

14)   Apply 2-3 layers of clear coat, and allow the helmet to dry 24 hours. Then smoothen the helmet with a 1500 grit sandpaper to give a matte finish on the surface.

15)   Remove the rest of the masking tape and re-assemble the parts back together. Your customized helmet is ready to ride!
