Guide to choosing the best program to create music on your computer.
In this article we will guide you in choosing the right program for you and your musical genre.
Choosing the right program to create the music you love can seem difficult, sometimes frustrating ...
There are many more or less complex programs, more or less professional, and we are often in a hurry to want to start making music and get our hands on it, but we don't know which program and how to use it!
We want to help you make the right choice, find the program that allows you to express yourself and become a true computer music artist.
You will find below the list of the best sequencers, vsti and plugins, and where possible links to the best tutorials available on MusicaDigitale, like our electronic music course
Let's start?
WHAT IS A SEQUENCER AND WHAT IS IT FOR?
The sequencer is the foundation of all computer music!
it is nothing more than the real program for pc, mac or linux used to create music.
If you've heard the term DAW instead, Digital Audio Workstation, it means a computer dedicated to audio management.
The sequencer allows you to record audio, create sounds from scratch, mix different tracks and create a complete song.
It allows you to manage, by recording and processing, audio and MIDI data, in order to finalize an audio track
Within the sequencer we will use plugins, which will allow us to create and effect sounds (VSTi and VSTfx).
a MIDI keyboard allows us to play our virtual synthesizer
An audio editor instead allows us to work on ready-made audio files (in mp3 or wave for example).
an external instrument (guitar for example) can be used in a sequencer via the amp emulator.
Finally, I can export my file to mp3 or wave. The wave version will be much heavier but without any loss of quality, and I can use it if I want to forward the file to an expert sound engineer for professional mastering. The mp3 file will allow you to save a lot of space, and is suitable for sharing your music on the web, to use it in your DJ sets, or to send a demo to a record company ...
Which sequencer to choose?
Obviously, choosing a sequencer isn't easy. There is no absolute best sequencer, but there is a sequencer with which you are better and that you are used to using.
In the forum there are many discussions about it, and often users remain on their positions, so it is not possible to give a definitive answer.
Also keep in mind that different world famous producers use different sequencers. A few examples?
It is therefore easy to understand that a good track is made by the artist, not the sequencer.
Here are some of the most famous sequencers.
Read carefully to get a general idea, and try out a couple of sequencers you think might be best for you.
Evolution of the old Fruity Loop, FL Studio maintains the setting marked by the creation of electronic music, although obviously it can be used to create music of other genres. Sound management is original compared to other sequencers (given the simplistic block structure of the step sequencer) and the mixer that manages insert and effect channels.
This program is also characterized by an affordable price and an excellent sales strategy: buy it today and you will have access to all updates for life! This is probably why there is a very active international community of producers behind Fl Studio, including many famous producers of electronic music, even if some people consider it just a toy, used to other sequencers.
However, some of the best plugins are sold separately, and if you want to buy them all the final price can go up to $ 700.
Other useful programs
There are other programs that allow you to work on sounds and music in general.
First of all there are the audio editors, which allow you to work on wave or mp3 sounds as samples, loops or complete tracks by adding the most disparate effects. They also allow you to record audio tracks directly inside them.
An excellent free audio editor is Audacity, equipped with a convenient interface through which you can edit and record multiple audio tracks at the same time. Includes dozens of different effects.
If you want to play live and don't want to buy expensive gear to give effects to your guitar or bass, you can try an amp emulator like Guitar Rig by Native Instruments, which offers amps, cabinets and different effects including the Twin Delay, the Skreamer (a excellent distortion), limiters, equalizers and reverbs. The Guitar Rig 5 Player version is free but obviously limited compared to the paid version.
Finally, we cannot fail to mention among the programs for "making music" Virtual DJ: it is a software that does not achieve the complexity and results of two cdjs used in conjunction with Ableton Live during a live performance, but it is still fun to use.
Thanks for making it this far!
