Rosewater can soothe your skin

"The main benefits of rose water in Pakistan skin are its anti-inflammatory effects, and its anti-oxidant effects on damage to free radicals," Dr. Chwalek. If you suffer from acne or rosacea and are looking for a natural treatment, rose water could help.

How to make rose water

There are two different ways to make rose water, either by simmering or distilling

Option 1: Simmering method

Supplies:

dried rose flowers (if fresh from an organic, pesticide-free source)

water

pan with lid

nut bag as different thicknesses of cheesecloth

dark bottle for storage (spray head optional)

Directions:

Measure 1/4 cup of dried rose petals in your pan. Use 1/2 to 3/4 cup when using fresh flowers.

Pour 1 1/2 cups of water into your pan.

Cover and bring to a boil.

Reduce temperature to the lowest setting so the water can still boil.

Simmer until the color of the rose petals has disappeared. Mine became almost colorless. This only took about 5-10 minutes.

Leave the lid on and cool completely.

Pour water and petals through the nut bag or cheesecloth into a dark, clean bottle. You can use a funnel or strainer in a measuring scale with a pouring pot and then pour it into your dark bottle.

Store in the refrigerator for several weeks or up to a week on the counter.

Option 2: Distillation method

Supplies:

dried rose flowers (if fresh from an organic, pesticide-free source)

water

ice cream

large stockpot with lid

clean brick (a real brick, from a house)

metal bowl as a heat-proof glass bowl

dark bottle for storage (spray head optional)

Directions:

Place a clean brick in the center of your large stockpot. I used an 8-quart stockpot and an average-sized brick. Place the metal bowl as heat-proof jars on top of the brick.

Mix about 1 1/2 cups of dried rose flowers in the stockpot. Put them around the brick and make sure you don't get any in the bin. Use 3-5 cups when using fresh flowers and press them downwards so that they are around the brick and under the metal bowl.

Pour water into the pot over the leaves until it almost reaches the top of the brick.

Embrace the lid and cover the stockpot. This allows the steam to collect and drip to the center of the lid and eventually drip into the bin.

Put ice on the top of the lid to encourage the steam to condense and then lower into the bowl. You can place it directly on the lid and suck the water with a turkey hybrid as the ice melts or you can put the ice in a ziplock bag so it is easy to remove and replace. You want to keep as much steam as possible because steam is actually your rosewater.

Bring the water to boiling and then reduce to the lowest possible heat that the water can still boil.

Replace the ice cream when it melts and soak for at least 30 minutes.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely.

Peel the lid very carefully so that none of your melted ice waterfalls into the jar.

Carefully pour the rose water collected in the bin into your dark bottle.

This will last much longer at room temperature (up to 6 months, though it doesn't stick in my house for that long), but you could always keep it in the refrigerator to make sure it stays well.

I had some water left in the bottom of the pot when I was ready. I straightened out the leaves and used this in a bundle of soap. It didn't have that strong of a smell, but I couldn't stand the thought of throwing it out
