The Types of Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency such as an injury to your teeth or gums is a serious matter that must be addressed immediately. When you ignore a dental issue, it can increase your risk of permanent damage along with the need for invasive, and expensive treatment in the future.

In this article we have comprised a list of the most common dental issues in no particular order:

Partially Dislodged Tooth

Visit a dentist near you right away. You can place a cold compress on your outer cheek and take an over-the-counter pain reliever until you reach your dentist’s office.

Lodged Food Particles

When a food particle becomes lodged between your teeth, it can be painful and cause inflammation in your gums. If you are faced with this situation, gently place a piece of dental floss between your teeth to remove the food particle. If you are unable to remove it, visit a dental office near you. Avoid using something like a pin or sharp object to poke away at the food particle that is stuck as this damages your gums or teeth.

Lost Filling

Firstly, you will want to begin by placing a piece of sugar-free gum into the cavity of your tooth. Alternatively, you can use dental cement which is available at most grocery stores. You will want to visit your dentist in Winnipeg right away.

Lost Crown

If your crown falls off, you will want to visit a dental clinic near you as soon as you can. If it is possible, you should slip the crown over your tooth, if not you will still be required to take the crown with you to your appointment. You will want to apply dental cement to the inner surface before slipping the crown over your tooth, as this will help to hold the crown in place.

Broken Braces or Wires

If you have a wire that is broken or sticking out of your bracket that is poky, use an eraser to push the wire so it is not obstructing your mouth. If you are unable to reposition the wire, you will want to place orthodontic wax, over the end of the wire and visit your dental clinic in Winnipeg right away. Note, avoid cutting the wire, this is very dangerous as you could risk swallowing it.

Loose Brackets and Bands

You will want to reattach the loose brackets using a small piece of orthodontic wax or you can place the wax over the braces which provide a cushioning. You will want to visit a dental clinic near you as soon as possible. Note, if the issue is regarding a loose band, save it and schedule an appointment with your dentist in Winnipeg to have it recemented or replaced.

An abscess is an infection that forms around the root of your tooth, in the area between your teeth and gums. This is a dangerous condition that can cause damage to your tissue and surrounding teeth. When it is left unaddressed, it can spread to other areas of your body.

A Chipped or Broken Tooth

Collect any pieces, and rinse your mouth and all broken pieces using warm water. Place gauze to the area for approximately 10 minutes to stop the bleeding. Next, apply an ice pack or cold compress to your outer cheek to minimize swelling and pain. Visit a dental clinic near you quickly.

If your tooth is chipped or broken, you will want to begin by washing your mouth with warm water. Next, floss your teeth to eliminate any food particles trapped between your teeth. To ease any swelling, apply an ice pack to your outer cheek. Visit your dentist in Winnipeg as soon as you can.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Hold the tooth by its crown and rinse it with water carefully if necessary to remove debris. Refrain from scrubbing it or removing tissue fragments that are attached. Attempt to place the tooth back in its former position, if possible. If this cannot be done, put the tooth in a container of milk to transport it to the dental clinic near you. The possibility of saving a tooth is much higher if you visit your dentist in Winnipeg within an hour of it being knocked out.

Above are some of the most common dental emergencies, but there are more. If at any time you experience pain that does not dissipate, swelling, or trouble swallowing, do not wait to visit a dental clinic near you.
