How Magnetic Stripe Works?

There are commonly two types of magnetic stripe card available, one is high coercivity (HiCo) and low coercivity (LoCo).

On a HiCo Card, the magnetic card is typically black and is encoded with a stronger magnetic field. They are more durable than LoCo counterparts and are, therefore, recommended for long-term use and situations that require frequent swipes.

LoCo on the other hand is generally brown and encoded with a weaker magnetic field. They are majorly used for short-term applications like hotel key cards.

However, in both cases, the information of the cardholder is stored as binary code on the magnetic stripe that you can see on the back of the card. To gain access to a given resource, the user swipes the card through the magnetic stripe card reader. The stored data can be read when the magnetic stripe passes over the reader’s head. Once the data is validated by the reader, the user will be permitted access.
