The theoretical explanation of Root Canal Therapy might scare you, but with modern tools and technology, you need not worry! Your tooth will be restored as new within two-three sessions.
Root canal treatment is given to patients with the severely infected or decayed tooth in order to save it. When a patient has a badly decayed tooth where the pulp and nerve of the tooth become irritated, inflamed or infected, it is treated by repeated dental procedures under the name RCT.
In a root canal procedure, the nerve and the pulp are removed by a San Diego dentist. Then, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed to protect your tooth from further infection.
A nerve in a tooth is vital to its health and function once it has come through the gums. It provides a sensation of hot or cold, and the absence of the nerve won’t let you feel anything.
Why is Tooth Pulp Removed?
With damaged nerve tissue, the bacteria get a way to enter and multiply within the pulp chamber. The bacteria and other decayed debris can lead in the development of an abscessed tooth (a tooth with pus-filled roots) which can cause the following:
- Swelling spreading to the face, neck, or head
- Loss in the bone around the tip of the root
- Drainage problems from the root.
- A hole can occur through the side of the tooth with drainage into the gums.
What Are the Signs That a Root Canal Is Needed?
The most noticeable signs are:
- Lingering sensitivity in the tooth, especially to heat or cold
- Sharp pain while chewing or biting
- Pimples on your gums
- Chipped/cracked teeth
- Swollen/painful gums
Root Canal Treatment Procedure
- Your San Diego dentist will take an X-ray to determine if there are any signs of infection in a surrounding bone. Then with local anesthesia, he will numb the area near the tooth.
- A rubber dam (rubber sheet) is placed to keep the area dry and free of saliva during treatment from the tooth.
- Then after, pulp, bacteria, and decayed nerve tissue are detached from the tooth, and the area is cleaned off with a many root canal files. After the cleaning, with spray of water or sodium hypochlorite will be used to flush away the debris.
- After a thorough cleaning, the root is sealed. In some cases, San Diego dentist waits for a week before sealing.
- In your next appointment, the interior of the tooth is filled with a sealer paste and a rubber compound named ‘gutta percha’ will be put in to close the hole that was created with drilling in the beginning.
- Then the further restoration such as a crown, crown and post, etc. of the tooth is done to prevent it from breaking and putting back to its full function.
